Broadway in December (Day 3)

My alarm went off at 8am!  That was really 5am Las Vegas time, but I was determined that the three of us get rush tickets to a matinee.  So, I called my sister to ensure she was up and we soon headed out to get in line at the theaters where we were to wait for the $37 rush tickets.

Gene and I walked Renee to the theater where "Pippin" was playing.  I decided to stay with her while Gene went over to the theater where "After Midnight" was playing.  Had I not already seen "Pippin," I would have gone with my sister to the matinee.

While in line for Pippin tickets, we met two young male students who were also waiting for rush tickets.  Talking to them helped to pass the hour as we all shivered in the brisk, New York air.

Gene called and told me he was the only person in line at the theater where the new show "After Midnight" was offering rush tickets.  I felt sorry for him because he didn't have anyone to help him pass the time.  But, he got our two $37 tickets as soon as the box office opened at 10am.  So, I left Renee in line with the two young students while I walked over to the TKTS booth in Time's Square to meet Gene.

Renee and I were hoping to get discount tickets to see Kinky Boots that night.  Gene had already seen it and said it was good.  Kinky Boots won the Tony for "Best Musical" as well as several other categories.  It features drag queens, which makes it very applicable to my life since I'm writing a new musical starring myself and two queens.  Thus, it was the best play for us to see.  Gene decided to go with us to see it again because he is orchestrating the songs for our original musical.  We bought three tickets, met Renee who had her Pippin rush ticket in hand, and all went to lunch at a little deli.

Renee was happy because she got a seat to Pippin right next to the young man we were talking with in line.  So, she didn't feel lonely.  She actually ended up getting really great seats in the mezzanine and had a wonderful time!  Pippin was one of the best Broadway musicals Gene and I had ever seen.  My heart was joyful knowing Renee would have that same experience.

As for Gene and myself, our seats for "After Midnight" were the farthest seats on the left where we missed half of the view of the stage!  LOL!  To top that, the performers used the stairs in front of our feet, so we had to keep them tucked close to our seats.

"After Midnight" was basically a Cotton Club Review with a great big band, wonderful singers and dancers, and two celebrity performers:  Dule` Hill (from the TV show, "Psyche") and American Idol winner, Fantasia.  Well, it was a good show, but not a great one.  There were some talented acts, though.  Fantasia was especially amazing.  Her voice was a splendid match for the old classic tunes she sang against a backdrop of some of New York's finest musicians.  As for Dule`, well, he didn't shine quite so brightly as he does on TV.   But it was an interesting experience, especially with our seats being where they were!  LOL!

I really didn't want to walk the long way back to our hotel after the matinee in the cold.  I was really tired, but we stopped in various stores to keep warm until we got there.  A little rest and then off to Kinky Boots!

I must say that it was hard to sit in discounted seats way up in the back mezzanine for Kinky Boots!  LOL!  I'm usually the diva who has premium tickets.  (Our view of the set)

I ate a ton of humble pie during this trip, but I must say that I am grateful for being able to go at all!  I am especially thankful to have spent such quality time with my husband and my sister.

Kinky Boots was highly entertaining as well as educational.  It gave me confidence that my new musical would have a wide audience appeal and that drag queens were gaining popularity.  Maybe this play would give me the writing career I'd been chasing since nearly getting a musical I wrote on Broadway in 1985?  Maybe I needed to be in this situation and in this place at this time in order to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish?  I was trying to find the good in all that was happening around me as the gnawing in my gut reflected my concern over what I knew I must face with Marvin upon returning home.

A picture I took of garbage bags covered in melting snow best depicted my emotions at that moment.  Marvin's snow job was melting and there was a ton of garbage underneath.

We were flying home the next afternoon.  I made the decision that night that Marvin was no longer my friend for putting us all in the position of being in New York without getting us any money back.  I made the decision that, even if he really were getting the life-insurance check or the money from the Credit Union settlement, I did not want him involved in the musical as an investor or as a performer.  I made the decision that I was going to investigate him when I got home by calling everyone he had spoken about during the two months he stayed in my house.  I made the decision that he was no longer in charge of the game and that there were no more "tomorrows."  I was done waiting.  The ball was now in my court and the shizzle was going to hit the fan at warp speed...

There may be Hell to pay soon, but for now...there were big pretzels!  LOL!

The next morning, Renee and I went to a Farmer's Market on the edge of Central Park.

There, we got ideas as to how to market and sell her famous "TOFFEE ADDICTION" products.  We felt we had done something productive and got some great contacts.  Be on the lookout for "TOFFEE ADDICTION" toffees, toffee pop corn and other toffee-related items!  And, if you want a free taste, give me a call!  I've been getting a lot of my friends hooked on the stuff!  LOL!
