If you have not read this blog from the first entry to this one, let me just recap. Marvin Nathan moved into my home on Sept. 24, 2013 for a two-day stay until his new apartment was ready. I did not realize that he had a track record of getting into people's homes and then concocting stories which would allow him to drag out that stay for as long as humanly possible, all the while taking money from his marks by devious means. I found this out months later when I decided to investigate.
In the last post, I explained how Marvin had now come up with one of his biggest lies in order to trap Gene and myself into further helping him. He had told us he was going to make us the beneficiaries of his life-insurance policy that his mother had purchased for him when he was born. To make a long story short, Marvin was now cashing in that policy of $126,000 to invest $75,000 in the play that I was writing, and in which he was one of the three stars. The rest of the money was going to be a cushion for him to live off of until the play was successful.
We will now take the story from after he signed the legal investment contract on November 17, 2013. He was still living with us because of a succession of lies wherein A. The money he borrowed from a friend in Florida to move him to Vegas was returned to that friend in order to keep his privacy B. The money deposited onto a credit card from another friend in Florida never got on the card C. His government disability checks were fraudulently taken by three employees of his Credit Union and his "lawyer" was working on a settlement and to get his checks sent to his new bank account D. The life-insurance policy money was delayed in posting in his bank account because he did not have a Las Vegas driver's license or address.
How's that for a bunch of lies? LOL! But wait, there's more! Marvin's lawyer, "Howard Newman," whom we later found out was non-existent and that Marvin was just great at speaking to no one on the other end of his phone, had "settled" with the Credit Union regarding the fraud with his disability checks! According to Marvin, "Howard" had gotten him $50,000 after his lawyer's percentage! So now, Marvin was not only getting his life-insurance check, he was also getting $50,000 from the Credit Union settlement, which "Howard" was sending right away! Then, good news! Ha! "Howard" was coming to Vegas with a girlfriend and was bringing the check. But "Howard" never made it. Neither did the check.
Okay, whew! I'm getting tired just writing about all the lies! But, I digress. Let's talk about the NEXT LIE in the series. It is by far the most unnecessary (as if any lie is necessary) and possibly the most cruel. You see, I LOVE BILLY CRYSTAL and had missed seeing his one-man show on Broadway called "700 Sundays" when he performed it over ten years ago. Well, Billy was going to do a short run of this play again on Broadway and I wanted desperately to see it. Marvin graciously offered to pay for a trip to NYC for me and Gene as a "thank you" for all the help we were giving him. Of course, I said no because it was too much. I also said we could not afford to go even with the investment he was making for the musical. He then said he'd give us $5,000 from the money that he was receiving from the Credit Union settlement. So, I looked at my airline miles and found out that Gene and I could fly to NYC for next to nothing. I found a very cheap hotel room and thought that it just might work out.
Then, I spoke to my dear sister, Renee, who had always wanted to go to NYC during the Christmas Holidays. In fact, it was on her bucket list. Renee had a heart condition that was preventing her from working. The Doctor did not want her to have any stress while they were doing tests and starting her on heart medication. Renee wanted to go with us if we went. So, I told Marvin and asked him if he wanted to join the three of us. I am very, very close with my sister. We are talking, VERY close!
Marvin said "yes" and then offered to pay for the four Billy Crystal tickets along with a celebratory dinner for us all if we went to NYC. Being that this was Billy's last performance of this show ever, we all decided to take up Marvin's generous offer and spend a few days in Manhattan.
We are now close to the third week of November and airfares, hotels, etc. are going up in price but Marvin's money had not yet posted in his bank account. He kept saying he was sure it would happen "tomorrow." We heard him speaking to his lawyer and to the bank...or so we thought. I told Marvin I should probably put the airline, hotel room and show tickets on my credit card before the prices got too high and then he could just pay me back as soon as his money posted. He gave me the data for his airline ticket such as middle name and birth date. I booked everything for the four us. My sister gave me $600 in cash toward some of her expenses. We were all excited to be going to Broadway for the holiday from December 16-19! I was going to see my hero, Billy Crystal!
Marvin's money still hadn't come in by November 20th, and I really needed my space. It would only cost about $1200 more to pay for Marvin's storage, phone, rental insurance and apartment rent. Except, he needed a money order or cashier's check for the apartment. No problem! My sister, Renee, had given us $600 cash toward her NYC trip. We told Marvin he could borrow her money for the apartment and that we'd cover the rest to move him that very day! He was a bit shocked! I don't think he expected us to move him out! In fact, I believe he was hoping to stay with us until he went to work in Reno for Frank Marino (Star and Producer of the top drag show "Divas") the first week of Februrary 2014! But Gene and I made the decision to move him out and it was done within minutes of telling him. I'm so glad it happened that way because he had no time to take anything from our home or do anything else devious like that.
But Marvin needed help moving his items from his storage to his new apartment. He decided to "hire" Gene's assistant who works for him in his recording studio. We'll call this man "B." "B" is a loyal friend of twenty years. He is also a huge black man who was once a gang leader. Not someone you want to cross. Marvin got "B" to move all his items from storage with a promise of paying him $150 when his money came in.
So now, he owed me and Gene all the money we put out for food and his bills along with the money were paying in interest as well as the loss of income from not booking any work during the time we thought we'd be getting a draw from his "investment" in the show for Gene's studio time to produce the songs. He also owed my sister $600 for her cash used toward his apartment, and $100 toward toffee gifts he "bought" from her. Lastly, he owed "B" $150 for moving his items into his apartment.
It gets worse from there, if you can even believe that! I hope you'll stay tuned to this blog to hear the rest of the creepy story! You really can't write this stuff! But the material is truly worthy of a reality TV show or a book or play. Hmmm....
